With every story an author writes, we choose a setting, a time, a special place in the universe within which to place our characters; be it modern day, the Roman Empire or, my personal favorite – medieval times.
However, one must always be carefully selective in our choices. Pack too lightly and you’ll be running around the coast of Kent naked with a mad army of marauding knights hot on your trail. Pack too much and you’re suddenly the crazy bag lady at the RenFaire – five skirts whirling, arms akimbo, and a few teeth short of proper bridge work. The trolls might be impressed but a waiting lady you might remain.
As with any trip, you must always remember to pack accordingly and prepare for the ride ahead. It’s not just a trip across the pond that you’re characters are taking; there are customs to contemplate. Dress codes and means of travel to be taken into consideration. Even the event of eating can be a course in the archaic as it no longer remains just the mundane affair of fueling the body.
Then of course, there are the knights themselves…and oh, how we love our knights! Be they big and brawny, unruly, broken, growly, cantankerous and swoon-worthy. By their sheer force of will and stamina, the pure Alpha males that they are, we swoon at their first sighting, we quake at the mention of their name and we moan for their touch. Yes, it is the embodiment of all that they represent in their armor and out of it that sets our hearts aflame. Whether they’re on their fierce steeds, or they’re saving the world and capturing the maidens, it is their history, their vigor and their chivalry that captivates us and captures our hearts and our imaginations.
